Biometric Door Locks for Increased Security, Control and Convenience

Simply put, the biometric lock provides a new level of ease and security for anyone who uses a door. With the mere scan of a finger, the pre-authorised individual has instant access to a property. A biometric electronic access control doorlock removes the necessity to carry cumbersome keys, and alleviates door users from the various problems associated with standard key, PIN, RFID and magnetic-stripe card access systems, whilst providing a new level of operating ease.

For too long the biometric access device has traditionally been plagued by two flaws that have been quite insurmountable. One has been the high level of cost in order to attain an accurate performance, putting the technology well out of the league of the consumer marketplace (or alternatively, giving an inferior level of accuracy and usability within an affordable price range); the second common flaw is the visual design characteristics of such devices, that have regrettably made the term "biometric" somewhat synonymous with the word "ugly". Nordic Biometric consigns both of these problems to history with the inception of its new biometric products.

The Nordic Biometric Mermaid is a beautiful, rugged, highly secure and easy to use biometric door lock device, with the highest complement of features in its class. Available in both Network controllable (TCP/IP) and standalone models, please consider the features that make the Mermaid the outstanding biometric access control system:

The Mermaid has a capacity of 900 fingerprints and 300 users that can be programmed into the lock at three different user levels depending upon the control that you want to give the user. An inbuilt clock allows you to set guest entries for a very specific time, with an instant deletion of the guest data after that programmed time period has elapsed. Standard users can be configured so that they may or may not be permitted to allow access to guests.

The Mermaid maintains an audit trail of all entries for up to 30,000 records, and the audit trail is easily searchable. Records are easily accessed via a number of different search methods, such as time, guest name or consecutive search. Guests cannot access the audit trails, and audit records are "black-boxed" for security.

In terms of access versatility, the Mermaid can also be optionally programmed to utilise a PIN for entry on the standard 12 key numeric keypad provided. An emergency key system that works with a standard DIN eurocylinder is another means of access, and The Mermaid is provided with a high security cylinder. For multifactor security protection, the lock can be programmed so that a user first has to enter a "wake-up" PIN before being able to scan his or her finger, in order to gain access.

The biometric fingerprint scanning part of the Mermaid is highly accurate, with a statistical false rejection rate of 0.01% and a false acceptance rate of 0.00001%. In practice this translates to a lock that is very unlikely to reject an authorised user, or allow the passage of an unauthorised person--or a fraudulent attempt at entry. The biometric module research, development and manufacture has been accomplished by a multiple award-winning venture capital and technology partner of high-tech giant Intel, Inc. with the resources of up to 50 million unique fingerprints at hand for research and development purposes. These aspects of the Mermaid ensures it's high accuracy of performance. Minutiae point encrypted storage of fingerprint data within the lock also ensures a high level of user privacy.

All of this control is provided via a very easy to use interface, which has a familiar four-way navigation keypad and two soft keys that control a large intuitive menu system, made visible via a pleasant blue backlit LCD screen and accompanying contextual audio prompting.

The body of the Mermaid is extremely sturdy, being a heavy cast zinc alloy which is thicker than many comparable products at 2.5mm wall thickness. Also providing good security is the full mortise with stainless steel deadbolt and auxiliary deadbolt. There are no structural plastic parts in the lock, and the liberal use of steel and zinc alloy weighs the lock in at over four kilograms. A variety of beautiful, scratch resistant "nanotech" finishes complement the Mermaid's design beauty, and an elegant sliding front cover protects the scanner window and keypad from the ingress of the elements.

Power options are versatile, and frugal consumption can see the standalone Mermaid operate for approximately a year on 4xAA batteries (under average use: approximately 3500 entries per battery-set estimated; newly designed high capacity "instant" rechargeable batteries may provide even more longevity of operation between recharges). The lock also accepts constant 6 Volt DC input for continuous power: a necessity on the network model when it is connected to a TCP/IP network. A "jump-start" feature provides the power to the unit if the multiple modes of battery low warnings are ignored for too long, and this power feature does not compromise the security of the device.

On the network model Mermaid, the lock is fully controllable and entry records are auditable via the network. In a situation such as a hotel, corporate or government/military environment, users, guests or administrators can all be "checked-in" at a lobby's PC server, with a simple USB fingerprint scanner attached to the PC. The user then has direct access to the lock at the IP which was sent the access information. User details within the lock can be remotely modified at any time, as can the actual security setting of the lock (normally open or normally closed). SDK documentation can also be provided to system integrators for maximum versatility with unique systems, making this the perfect access control for high security installations.

Overall, it is difficult to go past the Mermaid as the perfect all-rounder in a biometric access control device, with its rich array of features, its robust physical characteristics and its ease of operation. It is equally at home in the domestic, corporate, commercial, hospitality and government environments.

3 Simple Tips to Make Your Color Brochure Printing Hassle Free

Color brochure printing is easier to do with the advent of various printing technologies. Digital printing for example, revolutionized how printing companies produce short run prints. However, if you want a nice and error free color brochure printing experience, you may want to look at the following tips:

Tip 1: Know the available print sizes
Color brochure printing materials are available in several standard sizes. You can print them on 8.5 x 11 inch or 11 x 17 inch sizes. Of course, knowing the size your brochures will be printed is very imortant since it will dictate how much content your brochures will have.

Another thing to note is that the print sizes that you design your brochures on must be the same as the sizes that you want them printed. For example, an 8.5 x 11 design should be printed on an 8.5 x 11 brochure. Sounds basic right? Well many designers, especially the new ones, feel that using the same design and scaling it to an 8.5 x 17 size has no problems. However, the problem with this is that details are lost and that when scaled, the design will inevitably lose its integrity.

Tip 2: Bleeds are your friend
Bleeds are portions of the design that are outside of the printable area of the page. So how are they important if they are outside the printable are? Well, bleeds are important if you want to have a safety net to fall on when you encounter a problem when cutting and die cutting full color brochures.

While most of the die cutting and cutting equipment are very accurate, it is inevitable that in cutting thousands upon thousands of copies one or two prints may move out of place ruining the alignment of the cutters by several millimeters. What this causes is an unsightly white margin on your prints that will ruin the design. However, when you have bleeds, this could be avoided since the designs run over and continue till the end of the page.

Tip 3: Check the images
Images are very important in getting and holding the audience’s attention. However, to make sure that the images that you use are of prime quality, you need to have high resolution images to ensure that they are crisp and are up to standards.

Remember that you should check every image that you use in your designs. The images in your computer monitors may be crisp and detailed but images that are shown in your monitors only need to be at 72 dpi. The print industry standard for images is 300 dpi. When you use a low resolution image in your brochures, you will notice that the images are blurred or fuzzy.

Also, it is not advisable to use resolutions of mare than 300 dpi unless you are printing on large format. Normal sized images that have more than 300 dpi resolution will only eat up file size and they have no noticeable difference in color quality or detail.

When is graduation month for your students?

Growing up in Scotland, I always thought of July as being graduation month. But then UK people use "graduation" to refer only to being awarded a University Degree. Then I discovered High School graduation was a big thing in the United States and that happens around the end of May each year.

Thankfully, with the advent of the internet and online shopping you can buy graduation scrapbooking supplies all year round. And it's just as well, for did you know graduations do not only take place in the spring?

Here in the UK, the government policy is to have fifty percent of school kids going to university, so we have graduation ceremonies all year round - it's the only way you fit so many in!

While searching the internet recently, I discovered that in the southern hemisphere you have winter graduations in July! Now that's confusing! Being a northern hemisphere girl, the idea of July being winter and Christmas being summer, well I'm confused enough as it is! (It would be interesting to hear where you are reading this and when graduation is in your country.)

So, whenever your students are graduating, what graduation scrapbooking products do you need? At some point after the event you may be looking for graduation scrapbook supplies. What is available, and do you need special scrapbooking products?

No, you don't have to splash out on special graduation papers. For most layouts, the graduation scrapbook theme will be defined by the photographs you include.

Having said that, if you go to the beach for a barbecue to celebrate your graduation, without the cap, gown and scroll or diploma, it may not be quite so obvious that it's a graduation celebration. If that's your case, you may want to either use graduation papers for the background or add graduation embellishments to your layout to re-enforce the theme.

Your local scrapbook store will have a selection of graduation embellishments you can add to regular scrapbook papers that will do the trick. You can also shop online at various websites such as Jo-Ann, Scrapbook or at the ScrapGirls store.

What does your sticker printing product specifications actually say? And what does each product or detail contribute to your sticker printing? To its success? To its failure? Sticker printing may not be a delicate matter, but it can be with all the processes a normal print job undergoes.

An Overview of the Printing Process

An overview of the printing process with which stickers undergo is vital so you know how to approach it. It also gives you a good idea on how you will work out the timeline of your printing project, from turnaround time to shipping and the like.

For custom sticker orders, it may also give you an idea on the turnaround time your printing company of choice might need in producing your prints. Nevertheless, here is a short run on what your stickers undergo.

1. Once the printing company receives your files, it will be reviewed or evaluated. This is the proofing process where the pre-press department of a printing company checks for any errors, concerning the print quality, color and the like. Afterwards, a proof will be sent your way for approval.

2. Once you approve the file, it will be ganged. This is where your stickers are put in place on a huge sheet of paper along with other print jobs. If your stickers are made into single-run projects, then the whole sheet would be just your stickers. This makes for a whole plate consisting of only your design. Hence, making it a very expensive sticker printing.

3. Plating comes next which also involves color separation for offset sticker prints. Color separation involves creating plates for each of the colors cyan, magenta, yellow and black.

4. Sheets of paper or a roll of paper is then fed into the press.

5. The stickers printed on paper label must be left to dray using machines.

6. Afterwards, the stickers once again go back in line where it will be cut to size.

7. Stickers are then prepared for shipping.

Other Sticky Sticker Processes

The printing process that your sticker undergoes is only shown for standard sticker order. It will take a longer time to produce custom stickers because within this short and overly simplified overview, other jobs will be included down the line.

1. Spot Colors – If you want a very specific color on your stickers, then it would have to undergo spot coloring. This is an expensive process for the printing company needs to buy the exact paint needed for your job through the Pantone Matching System.

If a printing company runs prints with an advanced press, this can easily be achieved since everything is relayed. CMYK inks and spot colors are applied and dried in a single run.

2. Die – Cutting involves printers to make dies. Dies are the shapes pressed unto the paper to cut it into the right shape or dimension. The complexity of the cut that you want will affect the kind of material used to make the die with and making the die itself. This can make die cutting cheap or expensive, long or short too.

Dies are also made for embossing if and when needed for your stickers. It creates a raised, almost 3-dimensional effect on your prints.

3. Foil stamping too involve the use of dies and metallic ink colors. Again, the drying process may vary and may take time.

Communicate with your sticker printing company closely when working out a custom sticker project. This gives you a better idea on how to work out the deadlines and prepare your sticker campaign much well ahead as planned.

Package holidays are not everyone's idea of the perfect getaway, but for those of you who would prefer a DIY holiday there are a few important things to consider before booking.

Firstly, remember that paying for your DIY holiday by cash, cheque or debit card can be risky as there is always the chance that the airline company or hotel you have chosen could cease operating without any warning. And that means goodbye holiday.

But package holidays face no such risk as they are protected by ATOL (Air Travel Organisers' Licensing), a protection scheme specifically devised to reimburse holiday-makers in the event of such a disaster.

Sadly, though, DIY holidaymakers are unfortunately not protected under the ATOL scheme.

The advantages of a credit card payment for DIY holidays

Any credit card transaction of not less than £100 or more than £30,000 is protected.

Paying by credit card also covers you for any incorrect information or breach of contract by a travel company.

Don't forget that there are numerous low cost credit cards to be had, allowing you the freedom to spend a lot more money for those little holiday luxuries together with the confidence that you are fully covered against unforeseen disasters.

Are there any disadvantages?
