Jewelry fans today are particularly fond of sterling silver jewelry.  In times when the economic conditions the world over are uncertain and difficult, silver is a good alternative to gold jewelry.  It's class and elegance match that of gold, but it is much more affordable than gold.  Sterling silver is the accepted standard for jewelry today, and is made up of 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent copper.  When it comes to making jewelry, sterling silver has better physical properties compared to pure silver.  Silver is a versatile metal and can be used to make jewelry that suits a wide range of tastes and style.  For example, this metal is soft and ductile enough to create an intricate setting for a silver pendant or a relatively minimalistic and contemporary bracelet for a man.  Since it costs much less than gold, it is within reach for a larger number of people than gold is.   The range of silver pendants in the market today is quite dazzling!  The popularity of silver pendants can be attributed to the fact that the right pendant can be used to completely transform and liven up any outfit.  Even a relatively inexpensive piece that costs less than thirty dollars one a simple sterling silver chain can do wonders for your image and appearance.  Even older adults and people of a wide range of religious faiths and beliefs often use silver jewelry as expressions of their faith.  The Holy Cross, the OM symbol, and the Star of David can all be fashioned in silver.  These symbols can be quite simple, or can be more elaborate by the addition of inlays and precious stones.

The primary problem with silver jewelry is that it can tarnish or corrode when exposed to air.  It starts to lose its gleam and luster, and the color gradually changes from its characteristic bright white to give varying shades of light yellow.  If corrosion is not checked at this time, it will likely progress till it turns to shades of grey or even black.  This process of tarnishing is accelerated in warm humid weather.  Exposure to chemicals and even eggs can cause silver to tarnish.  It is important to note that tarnishing is not a permanent defect.  It can be easily removed by cleaning gently with a weak solution of sodium bicarbonate.  Dry with a soft cloth.  Avoid paper towels because the fiber in the paper can scratch the silver and dull the surface.
