Have you ever wonderd why Elephants have such a great memory?
As a sales manager for 32 years, I have always worked hard at trying to get new sales people to understand that listening to what people say to you is like being given the passcode to a combination lock. You see, most people are willing to buy something once you have addressed a need and offered a solution. The picture of the Elephant is a visual that I have tried to get into every new sales persons mind from my first training visit with them.
Listening is not an easy thing to do. The basic skill goes like this. You ask a question and then listen to the answer. The answer gives you the clues as to what needs to be asked next. Your mission is to get the prospective client to be doing ALL of the talking. Yes, they will sell themselves. So you have asked you first question; " Have you ever looked at Internet Marketing as a way to make a living?" You go silent !!! Let them talk as they will say yes or no, or they will start to spill their guts. If you get YES or NO, reply "Can you tell me about your experience?" or "Is there a reason you have never looked at this great income source?" .. Then be quiet and listen to the answer.. If you ask enough questions and LISTEN to the answers, you will soon have the key to knowing what you must do to sell this future prospect on your new innovative idea.
think about it, if you look at an elephant that is considered to never forget anything,, they have a mouth that is much smaller than their ears. In addition to that, they have two of these JUMBO ears to listen. Put a mental picture in your head of the Elephant with one mouth to talk and two JUMBO ears to listen the next time you are selling something to someone, and I gurantee you will be stunned what you are told by the prospective buyer that will help you close the deal.
Good luck becoming a great listener. By the way, it is very difficult to be quiet in a sales presentation. Keep in mind the old thought that in a sales call the first one that talks losses.
